UN demands to know the whereabouts of opposition legislator imprisoned in Venezuela

On Monday, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights demanded that Venezuelan authorities immediately inform them of the whereabouts of the imprisoned opposition legislator Gilber Caro, after several days without hearing from him.

We demand (that the) family and defense of @gilbercaro be immediately informed of his whereabouts,”

asked on Twitter the agency, based in Geneva.

Legislator Caro was arbitrarily imprisoned,”

added the office.

Gilber Caro, parliamentarian of the Voluntad Popular party, from the opposition leader in house arrest Leopoldo López, was captured on January 11th, 2017 by intelligence agents, accused of planning “terrorist actions” against the government.

According to the Venezuelan press, the legislator was transferred early on Friday from Tocuyito prison (Carabobo state, north) to Fénix prison (Lara state, west) due to an alleged plan to escape.

According to the UN office,

this transfer to an unknown place without informing his relatives constitutes (a) forced disappearance according to international law.”

On Sunday, leaders of Voluntad Popular and relatives of the man reported that he had disappeared more than 48 hours earlier and demanded a proof of life.
