UNA promotes initiative to counteract climate change

In November, The National University (UNA) launched the “Costa Rican network of local governments in the face of climate action,” a project that seeks to reclaim local climate initiatives.

The Paris agreement, as well as initiatives within the National Development Plan 2015-2018, motivated the UNA, along with other institutions such as the Municipal Development and Advisory Institute (IFAM), to join efforts to build transformative changes in diverse processes of local development, taking into account the effects of climate change.

From the academy, at the request of local governments, we want to promote the creation of this Network to extend the experience to the other municipalities of the country, where all organizations, institutions and individuals interested in strengthening climate management at the municipal level can also participate,”

said Vanesa Valerio, an academic from the School of Environmental Sciences of UNA.

At this moment they are in the process of collecting signatures to identify the municipalities and organizations that will support the initiative.

Subsequently a formal note will be sent to local governments for the affiliation of Mayors to belong to the Network, which must be approved by the respective Municipal Councils,”

concluded Valerio.
