Unions agree to meet with government but “without conditions”

The strike continues indefinitely, according to the latest statements by the unions, which claim they will accept meeting with the government as long as it is done without conditions.

The unions were annoyed by the government’s actions in Moín, as well as by the accusations of sabotage by the Ministry of Security.

We have sought dialogue from the first moment in a multi-sectoral table where we present a proposal with 39 points. We thank the rectors for their willingness to be mediators but we want the Church. We accept that meeting without conditions,”

said Mélida Cedeño, president of the Association of Teachers of Secondary Education (APSE).

To open that dialogue, they indicated they will report their position to the government and later the Catholic Church will confirm the date for that meeting.

Carmen Brenes, general secretary of the National Association of Educators (ANDE), described the actions of the security authorities in Limón and La Garita as abuse of authority and provocation.

The union said that when the movement ends they will file complaints for practices against trade unionists by the government, as they claim that the movements have involved people who are not workers to affect the citizens’ perception of the strike.

The trade union bloc indicated that it has always had the willingness to have a dialogue, but the government has refused.

Cedeño also said that this meeting will be preliminary, however the protest continues because they won’t back down unless the fiscal plan is no longer discussed in the Legislative Assembly.

For this Tuesday the blockades and demonstrations will continue in different areas. The unions will be concentrated in the morning hours in the Central Park and the Legislative Assembly.
