US ambassador to Nicaragua Laura F. Dogu expressed that the elections in November must be “fair and transparent”.
The diplomat gave her opinion when asked about the Nicaraguan electoral process, which does not allow the observation of experts and it is going to be carried out without the participation of the main opposition group.
If there is an electoral process and all the country’s voices can be heard, the people will trust their government. An opposite situation could cause weakness,”
said Dogu.
The main opposition in Nicaragua was leaded by Independent Liberal Party (PLI) but in May the Supreme Court took away the representation of this group from its leader, former Foreign Minister Eduardo Montealegre, to grant it to Pedro Reyes, a man with very little political activity.
Subsequently, the National Assembly decided to take the seats from 28 PLI legislators for not following Reyes’orders.
As consequence, some opposition groups have asked the people not to vote, after insisting on a “free and transparent” election.
Now, Daniel Ortega has a clear path to his fourth term and the third on a row, as the other participating parties are minority ones.
