University students create detergent made from eggshells

A group of chemistry students from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) created a detergent made with eggshells.

According to the teaching center, the product has a powder and liquid presentation and was designed to facilitate the work of the cleaning staff of the School of Chemistry.

Proneat was born from the interest of helping our Faculty of Science and our cleaning staff so that it can carry out its work more effectively. Previously, an industrial detergent was used that was very heavy on the hands and the tool used to clean the floor, which did not facilitate their work,”

said Marian Vargas Guerrero, production manager.

The team that makes up the fourth generation of Production, Development and Innovation (Prodin), realized that eggshells were a source of naturally occurring calcium carbonate, which allowed them to obtain a physical abrasive that’s more gentle on people’s skin.

This component helps to remove dirt in a simpler way. The detergent is environmentally friendly because its active ingredient is considered highly biodegradable: 97 to 99% of it breaks down naturally.
