Venezuela: a “gradual and alarming” deterioration of democracy

The situation in Venezuela is not improving and human rights continue to be violated, according to a new report from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH).

On Monday, February 12th, the Commission presented a new document in which it concludes that democratic institutionality in Venezuela is experiencing

a gradual deterioration that has deepened since 2015 with a complex problem that has its roots in an interference of the Executive Power in other Powers.”

The document was read by Francisco Eguiguren, president of the IACHR and country rapporteur for Venezuela.

The situation in Venezuela is the most sustained case of deterioration of democratic institutions in the region at present,”

the Commission reported on Monday.

Repression in Venezuelan streets was also lamented. For example, it is estimated that during the first three months of 2017 between 124 and 157 people died during the protests against the government of Nicolás Maduro. Acts of torture, sexual violence and submission to military courts were also reported.

The government of Nicolás Maduro was notified about this report on February 9th. The Commission asked the Venezuelan Executive Branch to adopt measures immediately to fully reestablish the constitutional order and the separation of powers.
