Venezuelan prosecutor asks for annulment of Constituent Assembly

On Thursday, the Venezuelan prosecutor asked a court to annul the installation of the Constituent Assembly due to an alleged fraud during the election.

The Public Ministry said on Twitter that the request made by two prosecutors before a control court

is based on the alleged commission of crimes during the electoral process”

of the Constituent Assembly.

Attorney General Luisa Ortega announced on Wednesday that she opened an investigation against the board of the National Electoral Council (CNE) following the complaint by Smartmatic, a company that provided technological support to the Constituent Assembly elections, stating the results were manipulated.

We are facing an unprecedented, serious incident, which constitutes a crime,”

said the prosecutor in an interview with CNN.

According to the electoral power, eight million people voted, but Smartmatic’s calculation is at least one million less people participated in this election. This accusation was rejected by CNE president Tibisay Lucena as a “baseless” assertion.

The participation figure was key to the constituency’s legitimacy, after the opposition claimed to have raised 7.6 million votes against the initiative in a symbolic plebiscite on July 16th.
