Veterinarian denies malpractice in case of Thor the cat

Julia Rojas

Veterinarian doctor Alejandro Gómez used cable ties from a hardware store on a surgical procedure of a cat called Thor, which deeply annoyed the animal rescue Association Catrix.

The cat was found by a couple from Limón in very bad condition, after being hit by a vehicle in the vicinity of the Zurqui tunnel. When seeing the condition of the animal, they decided to take it to a veterinarian in Turrialba.

According to Julia Rojas, from the Catrix Association, when using the cable tie to fix the pins to the bones, the cat had a reaction, so a second surgery was necessary.

The issue of this cable ties is not new and it has been commonly related to neutering procedures. This is forbidden, complaints have already been filed and sanctions have been placed and we do not understand how it is possible they continue to use them,”

stated Rojas.

However, Dr. Gómez assured that the procedure was performed correctly and that he even helped the couple with part of the medical expenses and lent them a cage that has not been returned.

I know what it costs and I try to help the animals as much as I can. Those types of ties can be used as long as they are sterilized, however, for this surgery I use surgical wire,”

said Dr. Gómez.

Despite the arguments of the animal specialist, Julia Rojas filed a complaint against the veterinarian before the Board of Directors of the College of Veterinarians.

The idea is not to attack the vets. But for us this is serious because it is playing with the lives of many animals that have no voice,”

said Rojas.

Thor is recovering satisfactorily.
