What do the mayors, councilors and trustees of your canton do?

The Costa Rican citizenship has the future of their cantons in their hands for the next 2020 municipal elections.

Do you know what are the responsibilities and the power of those who direct municipalities, regidurías and trade unions of each canton?

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) explains that the local government system works very similar to the Central Government of the country. For example, the mayors perform similar functions to those of the President of the country, while the councilors resemble the legislators of the First Power of the Republic.

In eight districts of the country, an additional position is chosen: the Mayor Their role is that of a mayor only at the district level and has a District Municipal Council that participates with its vote in all community decisions.

The districts where there is an Intendant responds to the distance between the district and the central canton. This is the case of Peñas Blancas in San Ramón, Tucurrique de Jiménez, Cervantes de Alvarado, Colorado de Abangares, Lepanto, Paquera, Monteverde and Cóbano de Puntarenas.
