Work progress in Florencio del Castillo highway

After the complaint of the Municipality of Cartago and even a neighbors’ demonstration against the poor state of the Florencio del Castillo highway that communicates Cartago with San José, the works of improvement are making some progress.

The intervention of the National Road Council (CONAVI) and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) began on January 27th.

After almost a month, Édgar May, an engineer from the Conservation Management of Roads and Bridges, said that progress was made with the night work to rehabilitate sections of concrete slabs.

We work at night time with one-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day. These works have continued to this day and are estimated to continue for several weeks,”

explained May.

The intervention takes place in both directions to fix the slabs and significant cracks or subsidence.

May commented that wide panels of asphalt are being placed on the road, which will seal all cracks and achieve a uniform surface in each slab, to prevent water infiltration.

The intervention should be conducted in approximately 15 kilometers, followed by a cleaning work in the drainage systems and the green zone.

Once again, CONAVI specified that this is not a definitive solution. The complete removal of the concrete slabs and their replacement is still necessary.

Although road conservation contracts were on the table, at the time the Comptroller General of the Republic warned that a work of this nature is not the competence of the Conservation Management because it is a work of reconstruction.

As a result, the process to obtain the tender has been delayed.
