Young Wook Chun: “Costa Rica should be compared at a global level”

Very few people have had the opportunity to visit South Korea, however Costa Rica has a very important representative of that culture, who visited the facilities of DIARIO EXTRA to talk a little about the relations between his country and Costa Rica, as well as the progress after the visit of President Luis Guillermo Solís to that Asian country.

South Korean ambassador to Costa Rica Young Wook Chun was interviewed and he declared that Costa Rica should not be compared at the Central American or Latin American level, but at a global level. In addition, he thinks that the country has a lot of potential, but it must take advantage of its relationship with South Korea, focusing on infrastructure, innovation and high technology.

He thinks that Costa Rica benefits from the FTA with South Korea: it was negotiated in mid-November 2016, so this year it will be signed by members of SICA, so that it can be submitted to the Legislative Assembly and once it is passed, the FTA will generate a lot of trade, as well as investment and cooperation and support. Costa Rica will have more coffee, pineapple and papaya exports to the Korean market.

He also mentioned that the minister of MICITT is also very interested in innovation and creativity, as well as in ideas of cooperation with Korea. For instance, he is very interested in the submarine cable between Korea and Costa Rica; in addition, it is working to share information or data between public institutions. Furthermore, authorities have talked about a center of innovation and creativity for Costa Rican businessmen and students.

When asked about the electric cars on Costa Rica, the ambassador declared that it is necessary to study how they have been received in both countries.

The Korean embassador has been serving his country for more than 30 years.
