1,200 animals die on route 32 each year

Route 32 is also dangerous for animals. In one year 1,293 animal died, victims of excessive speed, only the section from Río Frío to Sarapiquí.

CONAVI took into account the study by researcher Adolfo Artavia for the design of the new route 32. The company CHEC will build tunnels for animals in the areas identified as priorities.

The expansion of the route does not include protected areas, but it does go through a major wooded area.

We’ll put some nets to force the animals to cross an exclusive area to ensure their safety,”

said Kenneth Solano, CONAVI engineer in charge of the work.

The study by Artavia showed that the main victims on route 32 are amphibians like toads and frogs, which represent 46% of fatal accidents.

The second place is occupied by mammals, with 24%. The usual victims are opossums, two-toed sloths and armadillos.

18% of the victims are snakes and iguanas. And 12% are birds.
