500 people have died for excess speed in the last 5 years

The overwhelming desire to hit the accelerator took 505 people to the cemetery in the last 5 years.

Not surprisingly, the Road Safety Council (COSEVI) provided data that proved speeding was the leading cause of death on the road between 2012 and 2016.

Faced with the reprehensible road behavior seen in recent times, the Traffic Police is asking citizens to reflect on the subject, especially after the attack to 4 cyclists in Curridabat.

The Traffic Law is being disrespected… We could say this is a matter of education and awareness. I must take care of myself, but I must also respect others when I am on the road. We all have the right to transit,”

said Sonia Monge, deputy director of the Transit Police.

During the past year some 456 people died from road accidents. In fact, the year ended with the highest mortality rate in recent history: 9.32 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays were the days when more people died on the road during 2016. The main victims: motorcyclists, motorcycle companions and vehicles’ drivers.

This year things did not get better. As of January 29th, 43 road deaths were recorded, 13 more cases compared to the same period last year.

One of the first steps to begin tackling the problem is modifying the law to allow the Transit Police to make parts without the presence of the driver, which could be useful in hit-and-run cases.
