Abelino Esquivel: CCSS should not invest in “preferences” of transgender people

Abelino Esquivel, legislator from Costa Rican Renovation, asked Monday to the Board of Directors of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) not to invest in “preferences” of transgender people.

There is a member of the Board of Directors of the CCSS who is obsessed on allowing trans people to perfect their bodies. Now he says that they should give them (hormones) since they are teenagers so that they don’t suffer when they grow up,”

said Esquivel in an intervention in the legislative plenary on Monday.

Esquivel asked not to entangle things and stated that “if someone wants to increase or decrease [something in their bodies], they must pay for it with their own money! Nature did not give them these things, so now they are going to burden Costa Ricans with their preferences.”

He insisted that this has nothing to do with human rights and criticized that many hospitals are not well equipped, but they do want to invest in hormones for transgender people.

We invest where we have to invest, not in preferences. We invest in things that people need,”

added the legislator.

Esquivel referred to the issue after the Human Rights Commission of the Legislative Assembly ruled in favor of a bill that will allow transgender people to change their name on the identity card.
