Ombudsman in favor of recognizing gender identity of transgender people

March 17, 2017 by Staff News Writer

In response to the request made last year by the Costa Rican State to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights regarding gender identity and the economic rights of same-sex couples, the Ombudsman’s Office was clear in its position.

As explained by the Ombudsman, Monserrat Solano, the organization invited all institutions and individuals in the country who would like to submit comments on the request.

The Ombudsman’s Office made comments stating that not recognizing gender identity, particularly for transgender people, is contrary to the human rights protected by the American convention,

said Solano.

On the subject of the economic rights of same-sex couples, the institution believes that the issue should be seen much further, stating that for a couple to develop a life project the recognition of rights should be much broader
