Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transporte (MOPT), the Consejo de Transporte Público (CTP) and the Municipality of San José, have subscribed to an agreement for improving access to public transportation.
This is the first step to develop public-private alliances leading to “Sociedades Públicas de Economías Mixtas”, a scheme in which the MOPT looks to foster construction of bus terminals and organize transport units.
With the agreement, the municipality and CTP can start making studies to determine location and features of the terminals, bus routes and adapting structures to comply with provisions of Law 7600. The time projected to build the new terminals will be two years.
At the end of this phase of the project, the municipality will begin the leasing process to select the private contractor that will build the new bus terminal. The vice-minister of Transports, Sebastián Urbina, highlighted that the cost of investments will not be passed to the public transportation users.
He added that developers will recover their investments by leasing the commercial areas in the terminal.
The executive director of CTP, Mario Zárate, pointed that this agreement is an effort to make more efficient, organized and accessible public transportation.
The major of San José, Jhony Araya, said the forthcoming terminal will help to keep reaching the goal of organizing public transportation in the nation’s capital.
