Authorities do not rule out more deaths due to influenza

According to authorities from the Ministry of Health, there could be more deaths following the 10 fatal, influenza cases in the last six weeks.

For the next few weeks there will be more patients. Some of them will require hospitalization (the vast majority, those with risk factors) and some of those will fail to recover,

said Daniel Salas, director of Health Surveillance.

Salas clarified that not all people who die, die because of the virus, but rather because of other complications such as bacterial infections, or due to associated diseases, which decompensate them.

In addition, some patients go to the hospital for other reasons and the virus is detected then.

Nine of the ten fatal cases passed away because of risk factors.

Risk factor groups are the elderly, toddlers, pregnant women, and patients with chronic diseases, hypertension, asthma, heart conditions, lung problems, cancer, and obesity, among others.

The authorities insist on asking the population to take hygiene measures, which are key to keep these diseases at bay.
