Babies of 20 Zika-positive women show no signs of microcephaly

For now, the babies of 20 Zika-positive, pregnant women are out of danger of complications such as microcephaly.

However, Daniel Salas, from the Health Surveillance of Ministry of Health, said ultrasounds are not a 100% reliable tool to diagnose this condition.

According to the doctor, the diagnosis can be better defined in the second trimester of the pregnancy, but the most effective method is to measure the baby’s head at birth.

The cases of these women are concentrated in the districts most affected by the virus, such as Garabito, Carrillo and Quepos, but there are also others in Puntarenas, Limón, Parrita and Nicoya.

Salas stated they have managed to slow down the growth rate of the disease in Garabito, and have seen more reports of cases in places like Puntarenas, Orotina, Esparza, Santa Cruz and Limón.

The official urged the public to clean the yards of potential breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits this dreaded virus.
