The Costa Rican president, Luis Guillermo Solís, explained in London his desire of strengthening commercial relations with the United Kingdom and he seemed confident to overcome any impact Great Britain leaving the European Union might cause, an outcome labeled as Brexit.
Costa Rica has a free trade agreement with the European Union but it doesn’t have one specifically with the UK. If Brexit occurs, Solís said that is open to establish a trade agreement with them.
Solís met this Tuesday with representatives of British companies with interests in Costa Rica and with the British State Secretary of Trade, Mark Price. UK is the first stop Solís has made on an European tour that will also lead him to Italy.
Solís said Costa Rica is looking for British investors in all sectors. He pointed that currently there are many British companies operating in Costa Rica, whose activities cover from imports of fresh produce to even tech companies.
At a time, when British tourists are discarding traveling to the North of Africa, Turkey, or Egypt because of Islamism terrorism, it just opened a direct flight between San José and London with a frequency of two weekly trips.
In 2015, 69.000 British tourists visited Costa Rica, according to the British embassy records. It’s a small figure compared with 32 million of trips made by British last year and the 2,6 million tourists Costa Rica had on the same period.
