CNE to start draining dangerous lagoon at the end of the month

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) would start draining the dangerous lagoon that worries the neighbors of the community of Abrojo in Ciudad Neily, at the end of month.

Although it has existed for several decades, after Hurricane Otto the lagoon increased, and apparently, a geological fault that run through the place implies an imminent risk of landslide.

Carlos Viales, mayor of Corredores, explained that after an inspection by the CNE geologist on Monday and after a meeting, it was determined that machinery must be used to remove some pressure off the ground.

According to Mariano Figueres, who is the link to address the emergencies caused by the hurricane, since December and to date they have visited the area three times.

In February this year, the Municipality of Corredores requested an urgent intervention with machinery to the CNE (…) On May 2nd we consulted the CNE on the execution of these works and deadlines. We were informed that this week the bidding process will start, and on May 19th the works will begin,”

said Figueres in a text message.

The lagoon is about 6 hectares, and 14 meters deep and relieving it could take up to 22 days.

It is estimated that if the land yields and slides, some 10 homes with about 30 people living on the slopes of the mountain would be the most affected. It could generate an impact in the eight houses that are located to the margin of the river Abrojo.
