Coastguards saved green sea turtle´s life

A green sea turtle hardly escaped from being butchered in Siquirres. The animal was tied up on a beach in Barra de Pacuare sector and it was rescued by officers from the National Coastguard.

Officers were conducting a routine operation when they spotted the huge green sea turtle that had apparently been captured by poachers who sell the meat to bars and restaurants.

This case is not the first one with a happy ending. So far this year the Coast Guard has rescued and released 26 turtles in Barra del Pacuare. No suspects arrested for this case were reported.

The sale of turtle meat and turtle eggs isn´t a problem just in the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica. On Tuesday coastguard officers seized a man with 100 turtle eggs, which had been taken from a protected area.

The subject was referred to the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office to decide whether charges will be filed against him.
