Authorities prevented contaminated garlic from entering the country.
At two different times, Paso Canoas Tax Control Police stopped vehicles with a total of 1,000 kilograms of garlic each. The shipments did not have the corresponding phytosanitary permits and tried to circumvent the official controls.
After the arrest, the State Phytosanitary Service (SFE) denied the entry.
The SFE performed a sampling that was sent to their laboratories. The specialists found the presence of living organisms, namely Aceria tulipae, a quarantine pest absent in the country.
That is why the authorities destroyed the contaminated product. The garlic came in braids distributed in 100 sacks.
