Costa Rican Ambassador to The Netherlands will negotiate Nicaraguan Compensation

The President of the Republic announced that the Foreign Ministry has issued specific orders to the Costa Rican Ambassador to The Netherlands, Sergio Ugalde, to meet with his Nicaraguan counterpart to discuss the compensation to be paid by his country for the environmental damage to Isla Portillos.

The neighboring nation has until December 16th to cancel the $ 6 million dollars as compensation for the damages caused to the country, according to the resolution by the International Court of Justice.

If the compensation is not paid in time, Costa Rica could denounce Nicaragua before the Court to determine the process to be followed, which could even increase the amount to be paid by Nicaragua.

Last week, after President Daniel Ortega claimed to want an improvement in relations with Costa Rica, Solís responded that for that to happen he needed to see actions, not just words, and demanded the payment of the compensation.

They even talked about the possibility of investing the funds in projects of improvement for the border between both countries, something that today the President defended as a proposal, but not as a fact.
