Nicaragua must pay the compensation before December 16th

December 9, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Nicaragua must pay the 6-million-dollar compensation for environmental damage in Calero Island before December 16th, otherwise Costa Rica could file a complaint to the International Court of Justice to determine the sanction.

After President Daniel Ortega stated that he wanted to meet Luis Guillermo Solís and leave behind the differences between them, the Foreign Ministry responded with Costa Rican president’s words, reminding Ortega that concrete facts are needed to start improving the relations.

One of Solís’ conditions was the payment of the compensation.

Weeks ago, it had been said that if by the day of the deadline Nicaragua didn´t pay, Costa Rica will immediately file a complaint, but now the government would be willing to give a little more time, as long as the neighboring country makes a statement about it before December 16th.
