Costa Rica’s heroic firefighters

The voracious fire that consumed much of a plastic factory in San Miguel de Santo Domingo de Heredia left shocking images that highlight the wide deployment made by the Fire Department of Costa Rica.

The flames consumed little more than seven thousand square meters of construction.

Some 15 houses were sheltered to avoid the flames and some 6 houses were partially damaged by radiation.

About 80 firefighters from stations in Heredia, Central, Pavas, Tibás, Coronado, Santo Domingo and Barrio México participated in the emergency. Some four rescuers were injured, three of them with minor burns that required their transfer to the hospital.

The causes that caused the incident are still unclear. But the fire clearly spread easily because flammable products (such as chemicals, wood and plastic) were stored at the site.

Witnesses approached by the press in the vicinity of the emergency explained that in a matter of 20 minutes the flames consumed one warehouse and spread to another nearby.

Fortunately, there were no people inside who could get hurt.

The smoke and the toxic gases caused affectations among the nearest neighbors.

It should be noted that the smoke and fire column was visible from different points of the Central Valley.
