Damage caused by Hurricane Otto will not prevent education

Twenty-nine schools were affected by Hurricane Otto last November.

However, none of them were declared uninhabitable after an analysis carried out by the public universities of the country, so lessons will start normally.

Twenty-six of these schools are in Upala, two are in the South zone and one is in Tortuguero de Limón.

Our engineers are in the area to quantify the damage. Quantify in the sense of the amounts required to make the repairs,

said Walter Muñoz, director of Infrastructure and Educational Equipment of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP).

The main damages are broken roofs, leaks, deteriorated wooden trusses and cracks in the walls. However, the report of the National
Laboratory of Structural Models and Materials (LANAMME) indicates that the centers needed maintenance before the hurricane.

The MEP estimates that it will have to invest close to 1 billion colones to repair these centers.
