Drivers encouraged to turn right when traffic lights are red

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation is telling drivers that they can make a right turn when the traffic lights are red.

Through a social media campaign, the institution seeks to reduce traffic jams.

The move does not imply bypassing road rules, but is allowed by current traffic law.

Mario Calderon, head of the traffic police, said that even if the move is legal, drivers should still slow down to make sure the way is free from moving vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists.

With the arrival of rainy season, traffic jams and road accidents have increased. Only between Tuesday afternoon and evening, traffic police attended to 266 crashes.
