Costa Rican Institute of Technology (TEC) is developing a sustainable and ecofriendly housing project. They explained that a wooden house produces up to 45 tons less carbon dioxide (CO2) than a concrete one. they also stated that the houses are as safe as a regular one if the building and electrical construction codes are properly applied.
The project uses trees that come from timber plantations instead of forest, so when a tree is cut down to build a house, immediately another one must be planted, making it a sustainable and continuous activity,
said Diego Camacho from TEC.
It is estimated that a wooden house durability is up to 30 years, but the wood must be treated to protect it from pests and other wood diseases.
Projects have been developed in Batan and Horquetas and very soon they are going to work in Turrialba and Valle de la Estrella.
