Foreign athlete was killed in half marathon in San José

The national athletics are in mourning due to the death of Venezuelan David Yáñez in the Half Marathon San José that was held this Sunday.

The organization of the competition assured that they had all the necessary permits for the race.

They even explained in detail the number of officers and personnel responsible for ensuring the safety of athletes:

• 19 officers of the Traffic Police
• 90 banderilleros
• 4 ambulances
• 1 security chief

However, they did not expect a drunk driver, disrespecting a stop sign by an officer and running over the South American athlete.

The event has all the safety rules, necessary permits of the authorities and insurance policies for the registered athletes, the endorsement of the Costa Rican Athletics Federation (Fecoa), and the Costa Rican Institute of Sport and Recreation (Icoder),”

said the organization.

After the impact, Yáñez was transferred to the Calderón Guardia hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:59 a.m.
