Frente Amplio proposes urgent measures to reduce deficits

Frente Amplio legislative faction proposed a fiscal contingency project that includes urgent measures, most of them temporary, to alleviate the fiscal deficit.

Edgardo Araya, head of the party, said they insist on the need for a comprehensive and definitive tax reform that will pay more to those who have more, without affecting small businesses and low-income sectors.

The proposal includes:

– Two year salary freeze for senior civil servants (President, ministers, deputy ministers, deputies, CEOs and managers of decentralized institutions).
– To freeze, for two years, the salaries of all officials with salaries higher than ¢ 5.4 million, as well as the subsistence allowance for members of boards of directors of public entities.
– Elimination of subsidy to financial institutions
– An extraordinary and temporary tax on tobacco, alcoholic beverages and ownership of vehicles valued at more than ¢ 10 million.
