ICE is planning to build a new geothermal, power plant

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) held an international tender to purchase a 55-megawatt steam turbine, which will be the central component of Pailas II geothermal, power plant to be built in Liberia, Guanacaste.

Initec Energy, Spanish engineering company, will be in charge of the project. Japanese firm Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems is the steam turbine supplierand it will also send engineers to the site to provide technical advice on installation and commissioning.

This geothermal plant is intended to alleviate the impact of climate change by increasing the level of energy supply from renewable sources.

According to Luis Pacheco, manager of the ICE, the institution is already building civil works.

It is planned that in January 2018 the turbine is delivered and it will formally start operating in early 2019.

In recent years, the demand for Costa Rican electricity has been increasing at the rate of a steady economic growth.

-Cooling tower.
-Substation.
-Pipes of geothermal fluids.
-Separating station.
