Important tremors shake the interior of Poás Volcano

The internal tremors are constant in Poás Volcano. This Sunday was a 2.8-magnitude event at just one kilometer deep.

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), this earthquake was felt by residents of nearby areas between Alajuela and Heredia, in San Pedro de Poás, Poasito, Bajos del Toro, and Cinchona at 1:51 a.m.
Between Friday night and Saturday morning two similar events occurred at the same depth.

Important volcano-tectonic earthquakes (VTs) are still being recorded and are associated with rock breakage due to stresses in the crust and have been located northwest and southwest of the active crater,”

reported OVSICORI.

The volcano continues to emanate gases, water vapors and magma gases.

After an inspection made on Thursday, scientists from the National Seismological Network (RSN) confirmed the total disappearance of the crater lake and the presence of 2 mouths where gases and ashes are expelled.

Monitoring activities are constant. Next Thursday it will be three months since Poás Volcano National Park (the second most visited in the country) closed due to volcanic activity.
