Poas volcano also erupted

June 21, 2016 by Staff News Writer

Turrialba was not the only volcano to erupt on Monday. Poas volcano’s activity has been increasing recently and now phreatic eruptions are being registered.

According to Maria Martinez of the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica National University (OVSICORI), the eruption occurred at 3:00 am but could not be captured by the cameras because of the area was cloudy.

There is a seismic recording of a phreatic eruption (when magma makes contact with water, which evaporates causing a steam and gas explosion). Since early April this year, the volcano’s acid lake has shown clear signs of high activity in the fumaroles below it, making it milky gray,”

described Martinez.

Experts believe that this volcano entered a new cycle of phreatic activity in June, after 2 years of inactivity.
