In Costa Rica, access to mobile data is excellent, but its speed is pretty bad

According to The Status of Mobile Networks: Costa Rica (November 2016) report, conducted by OpenSignal along with the Superintendence of Telecommunications (SUTEL), Costa Rica is a country where access to mobile data is excellent, but mobile Internet speed is bad.

It stated that it is easy to find signal, as the 3 operators have been able to provide 3G connection. However, the signals are not good. The speeds of 3G Internet, as well as 4G Internet, are much slower than the world average.

The information was collected from August 1st to October 31st, based on the performance of Claro, ICE Kölbi Group and Telefonica Movistar.

Movistar leads this list in speed, availability and latency.

Costa Rican telecommunications companies have not invested large amounts on broad spectrum as other countries around the world, but speed is likely to improve when operators increase their capacity.

The case of our country is described as “interesting”. All three operators have built an expansive 3G infrastructure, but there is not do an equivalent level of development in 4G networks, particularly when it comes to deploying LTE capacity.
