Amid the threat by the arrival of Hurricane Otto in Costa Rica, Wednesday morning saw the birth of a giraffe in the center Ponderosa Adventure Park.

The giraffe was named Isabel. It is the ninth giraffe born in Costa Rican soil. It weighed 60 kilograms and measured 1.50 meters in height.

According to Tania Pivovarova, the park’s veterinary, Isabel is Adriana’s fifth offspring. Adriana arrived in 2007 from Ohio, United States.

Now she will be in quarantinefor about 6 months, the first 20 days are hard, then she’d start eating branches and about 6 months from now she will be able to interact with other giraffes and visitors,”

said Pivovarova.

The specialist said that the high birth rate of these huge creatures in Liberian soil is due to the good conditions in which animals such as zebras, Watusi, dromedaries, oryxes, bongos, wildebeest and ostriches live.

The new giraffe remains in a section known as “maternity” which keeps it away from animals of their species, although it can be seen from afar by tourists who come to Ponderosa Adventure Park.
