In August, 1995, five members of a family were arrested. They were sentenced for international drug trafficking. 21 years later, they were captured again, this time in Pérez Zeledón.
Five out of the 7 detainees are surnamed Vargas Hidalgo. They are part of the biggest drug trafficking gang of Pérez Zeledón.
The subjects counted on the support of their children, wives and relatives to run the business, which aimed to distribute and sell marijuana and cocaine to different sectors.
According to the investigation, part of the money obtained by the group was invested in the purchase of cars and houses.
Walter Espinoza, director of the OIJ confirmed that about 7 people were previously arrested and they are currently serving their sentences.
It was known that two MINAE officials were part of the gang and they informed criminals about antidrug operations in the area.
