Labeling transgenic products would be mandatory

Legislator Edgardo Araya, head of Frente Amplio, presented a bill that would force traders and producers to report goods that use genetically modified organisms, known as GMOs.

The initiative aims to modify article 34 of the Law on Promotion of Competition and Effective Consumer Defense.

According to Araya, in Costa Rica there is a total absence of the obligation to point out the origin of food and its components in cases of GMOs.

This lack of information prevents consumers from deciding whether to buy these products or not because they are not labeled. This is worse if we consider that there are serious doubts about the health damages associated with the consumption of GMOs,”

added Aaraya.
