Laura Chinchilla: Army must step aside in Venezuela

After the appearance of Juan Guaidó as opposition leader in Venezuela, former Costa Rican president Laura Chinchilla assures that the only support Nicolás Maduro has to stay in power is the army.

What is the only thing missing in Venezuela? That the army steps aside,”

said the former president in the show Enfoques this Thursday, January 24th.

Chinchilla highlighted three events that occurred in the last hours and that have been key to the turnaround in Venezuela’s course.

The first one is the massive support of the international community to Guaidó. Second, the unit that has won the opposition now with Guaidó as leader. Third, Wednesday’s massive protest against Maduro.

The evidence is so overwhelming that nobody can close their eyes (…) All these evidences have made the international community close ranks against the regime,”

added the former ruler.

On January 10th, Maduro assumed his second term. Immediately, the figure of the head of the Parliament emerged. Juan Guaidó wants Maduro to leave office to call new elections.

The international community, for the most part, asks Maduro to leave. In Latin America only Cuba and Bolivia have supported the regime, while the United States Government expressed its support for the head of Parliament, as well as the United Kingdom.

Mexico and Uruguay do not take a firm stand.

During the interview on Thursday, Chinchilla expressed concern that Nicaragua is following the exact same steps as Venezuela.
