Legislator proposes lowering political debt by 50% by 2018

Congressman Edgardo Araya, presidential candidate for Frente Amplio, presented a bill on Monday to reduce the amount of political debt for the 2018 presidential elections and the municipal elections of 2020 by 50%.

With the initiative, Araya aims to reduce the budgetary burden of the State and to cushion the crisis of liquidity of the Government.

The situation of Central Government finances is serious and complex. It’s been almost a decade of maintaining a high and growing fiscal deficit, which implies an accelerated increase in public debt. Interest payments are the main resource drain of the State,”

said Araya.

The legislator added that it is urgent to reach a serious agreement that will allow progress towards a comprehensive and progressive tax reform, and argued that political campaigns should be based on the generation and dissemination of quality information for citizens to make a conscious and rational decision when casting their votes.
