Legislators approve global convention to fight enticement

The Legislative Assembly approved in an initial debate an agreement with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) that will allow the country to fight corruption of public servants in international commercial transactions.

Enticement is a widespread phenomenon in transactions that include trade and investment.

The agreement seeks to establish standards between the parties for the purpose of fighting such offenses. This includes that public officials who commit such crimes could be punished.

However, in the case of Costa Rica, a clarification was included to prevent the extradition of nationals who are in the territory.

Luis Vásquez, head of the Christian Social Unity Party (PUSC), stressed the importance of the agreement, but said that extradition of Costa Ricans will not be allowed for reasons of constitutional order.
