National Bank of Fertilized Eggs is no longer on the table

The Health Ministry backtracked its decision to create a national bank to keep in vitro fertilization (IVF) eggs that were not transferred to the woman.

Minister Fernando Llorca confirmed that the plan was discarded and instead the ministry would require IVF centers to keep the eggs in their laboratories and report them to the Ministry of Health.

Now, eggs fertilized eggs through IVF can never be destroyed or discarded. They will not be subject of cloning, genetic testing or any kind of manipulation. The remaining zygotes can only be used by the same couple, who can also donate them to infertile people.

So far, the health ministry has only given permission to perform IVF to Centro Fecundar Costa Rica in Cima Hospital, which has not reported any frozen eggs.
