OAS Secretary Appoints Luis Guillermo Solis as Chief of Observers in Elections in Guatemala

Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), appointed former President Luis Guillermo Solís (2014-2018) as the head of the organization’s observer mission for the upcoming elections in Guatemala on June 16th.

The announcement was made by Almagro on Wednesday after signing a collaboration agreement with the Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Sandra Jovel, to send electoral observers to the Central American country.

Almagro also made the announcement on social networks.

On June 16th, Guatemalans will elect president, vice president, legislators to Congress and the Central American Parliament.

In 2015, Guatemala was submerged in an institutional crisis due to accusations of corruption against the then president Otto Pérez Molina, which resulted in his leaving office and the subsequent arrival of an interim president who ended his term. That same year, after elections, the population chose the television comedian Jimmy Morales.
