Poás Volcano got its lake back

OVSICORI

The characteristic lake located in the crater of Poás Volcano, in Alajuela, reappeared in the last hours, after it dried up in June last year due to the intense activity of the colossus.
The information was confirmed by the Vulcanological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) of the National University (UNA) and the National Seismological Network (RSN) of the National University (UNA).

According to the publication made by OVSICORI, the reappearance obeys to the constant rains of the last days, as well as to the closing of conduits.

Poás Volcano entered a new eruptive cycle in April 2017. One and a half months after intense activity the lake disappeared almost completely. This was one of the main attractions for tourists who visited the area.

Weeks before it disappeared, scientists had warned about the possibility of this happening.

During May, Poás remained calm with small eruptions and the crater lake began to dry. By May 22nd (one month after the last major eruption), the underwater fumaroles began to be exposed or emerged and an internal separation was formed in the lake (barrier or mud bar), like two smaller lakes,”

explained Guillermo Alvarado Induni, volcanologist at the National Seismological Network (RSN).
