Prosecutor’s Office declares war on tax evasion

The Assistant Prosecutor for Economic Crimes reported that between 2012 and 2016 they managed to recover more than ¢ 12 billion colones from tax evaders companies, in favor of the Treasury.

According to the entity this is a historical figure and the money is the result of criminal prosecutions indicted by the Prosecutor’s Office for the crime of tax fraud.

The alternative measure used for these processes was full compensation for damage, which is fully paying tax debts to the Ministry of Finance, including interest and penalties, as well as an additional 30% for the social damage.

According to Deputy Prosecutor, Warner Molina, since 2012 the Prosecutor’s Office has implemented a decisive policy of criminal prosecution in tax matters, to fight tax evasion in close coordination with the authorities of the Ministry of Finance.

The Public Prosecutor investigates 16 complaints for tax fraud, for taxes allegedly evaded by large taxpayers, for an amount that exceeds ¢ 23.584 million colones.
