Prosecutor’s office: the fight against corruption is everyone’s business

With the presence of the high hierarchies of the Supreme Powers, the Public Ministry celebrated its 43rd anniversary on Monday. Currently, the institution has more than a thousand employees in 80 different offices and 70% of the cases that are processed are criminal. However, in its beginnings there were only 10 prosecutors.

Carlos Alvarado, President of the Republic; Carlos Chinchilla, chief of the Supreme Court of Justice; Carolina Hidalgo, president of the Legislative Assembly; Emilia Navas, Attorney General; and Walter Espinoza, Director of the Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), participated in the celebration.

Navas used her speech time to remind citizens that the fight against corruption is everyone’s business.

I am very honored personally, but more honored to be celebrating this in your presence (…) we must point out that this obligation to attack corruption is not an exclusive task of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, but of all citizens. Remember that corruption exists because there is a corruptor (…) corruption hits all social foundations. We have many adversaries, internal and external, but we have drawn up an ambitious plan (…) we intend to be coherent in our work actions and our responsibility discourse,”

said Navas.

Espinoza, current director of the OIJ, said that with the Public Ministry,

there are common interests and that is why, in the face of a difficult current situation, we find the appropriate allies in the Office of the Prosecutor.”

In the activity, a series of certificates of forensic specialties were also delivered to 13 prosecutors.
