Psychological test for drivers is not an immediate measure to be imposed

Will be there a psychological test to get a driver’s license? Is it a good idea to perform a regular evaluation to determine whether a driver is in condition to operate on national roads or not?

These questions have been asked recently. However, the Directorate General of Traffic Education considers that it is not an immediate measure to be imposed.

Nevertheless, it seems that some people just need to get inside their cars to express their emotions. For instance, last weekend a 23-year-old man died after being run over by a 89-year-old who was annoyed after being fined.

In addition, the Road Safety Council (COSEVI) confirmed theat there have been recent cases of aggression against officers from the Traffic Police while attending incidents.

Hugo Jiménez, head of Road Safety Education, explained that there is a requirement for a medical opinion, which, in his opinion encompasses the most important aspects of health.

In other countries, more studies are performed when a doctor detects any abnormality or inappropriate behavior.

Jiménez explained that it is a matter of law and older adults must have the same opportunities as young drivers. In addition, he declared that the application of a psychological evaluation depends not only on Road Safety Education, but on organizations such as the Medical College of Physicians and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT).
