Solís condemns North Korean nuclear action in UN speech

President Luis Guillermo Solís said goodbye to the UN with a speech against denuclearization, mainly because of what happened in North Korea, and a request for equality of women in the economic area.

On Tuesday afternoon, the president gave his last speech in the General Assembly of the United Nations as a Costa Rican representative, in which he took a couple of applause and left a message of equity and peace for the world.

Sustainable development, women’s economic empowerment, climate change and peace and security were some of the issues addressed by the president, who even gave a message in English to the women of the world.

Solís strongly condemned the situation in North Korea, which is increasingly conducting nuclear weapons tests that are endangering the lives of millions of people around the world.

We strongly and vehemently condemn the nuclearization of the Korean peninsula. We will always be on the side of dialogue, active diplomacy and multilateralism,”

said Solís, who received applause for his speech.

We call on the parties involved as well as the United Nations Security Council to take an active role in avoiding escalations of tension that could lead to dire consequences and from which there is a risk of non-return. We cannot remain silent or sit idly by, we demand that the Security Council acts immediately, as it is its responsibility to contain this situation,”

added the president.

Solís said goodbye dedicating the speech to his children, not before claiming to be against the blockade that the United States imposed on Cuba for 55 years.

Thinking that unilateral economic sanctions are ineffective as methods of punishment for governments, but they do have a serious impact on the rights of peoples to welfare and development, I manifest the opposition of my country to the blockade that the US imposed on Cuba for 55 years with high human, economic and social costs for its population,”

explained Solís.
