Solís declined to declare his support for a specific action of the OAS regarding Venezuela

Costa Rica’s president Luis Guillermo Solis declined to declare his support for a “specific action” within the Organization of American States (OAS) regarding Venezuela, which could be suspended from the agency.

Two days after OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro recommended suspending Venezuela from the organization if it does not hold a general election shortly, Solís entrusted Uruguayan diplomat’s work but he avoided sharing his proposals.

Solis totally separates from former president and former secretary of the OAS Miguel Ángel Rodriguez’ recommendation, who said that Costa Rica must be the first to fight so officials apply the international law:

The government must courageously take the lead and keep a strong position in the OAS to request the suspension of Venezuela as long as conditions that guarantee the democratic state are not met.

According to the Costa Rican president, the OAS should continue the internal debate on Venezuelan political and economic crisis, but he was not clear on what decisions should be made by the body that brings together all the countries of the region, except for Cuba.

Solís thinks the 75-page report issued by Almagro, accusing Caracas of diverting from the democratic path and declaring the failure of diplomatic negotiations, “will enrich” the discussions in the OAS. However, he added that Costa Rica has other assessments to make, which are the result of its own in-situ observations and the opinion of other countries.
