Subcontrated workers fear Walmart would lay off 5,000 people

A group of subcontracted workers at Walmart protested on Friday afternoon in front of the Ministry of Labour to demand that the institution intercede to stop the alleged dismissal of 5,000 workers.

Walmart recently announced that it will create 1,500 contract positions,in which is included switching current subcontracted positions to contracts.

Rodrigo Navarro, one of the coordinators of protestors, said that after the company hires 1,500 employees it would lay off more than 5,000 subcontracted employees.

These presumptive layoffs would come from changes in personnel that manages and monitors the shelves in supermarkets.

“We’re here to ask the Labour Ministry to make Walmart to sit down and talk with contractors and workers representatives”, Navarro said.

Walmart said that agreed with most of its subcontractors agencies that tasks in the shelves will be done by hired staff, starting from a date yet to be defined.

The company added that it is willing to consider employable to any subcontracted worker currently working in the shelves at its stores.
