Taxi drivers complain ARESEP left them “hanging”

After the Controller General, Roberto Jiménez, canceled a meeting scheduled for Tuesday with a group of taxi drivers, the representative of the group has had diverse and contradictory reactions.

First, the president of the Costa Rican Taxi Drivers Union (UTC), Rubén Vargas, said he was very happy for the suspension of the meeting. Vargas then said that although he was happy, he was also sure the General Attorney’s Office was simply going to scold the ARESEP.

Now, three days after the Controller General announced the suspension of the meeting, Vargas reveals his discomfort by saying that it regrettable that

after we were willing to stop the pressure measurements we carried out last week, his good faith has gone south when he left us hanging by suspending the meeting.”

The chief of ARESEP claimed that he could not have a serious answer for taxi drivers on Tuesday, because he is still waiting for the answer from the Attorney General’s Office to determine the legal power to block Uber app.

According to Vargas, this is just a way of delaying the definition of the actions to take in the Uber case.

The representative of the taxi drivers said

the Attorney cannot tell you what to do. That is your duty and you should define it according to the law. Your word (Roberto Jiménez’s) is enough to suspend Uber’s platforms or apps. Please, do your job! Act against Uber, don’t be afraid. The law protects you. You don’t need the Attorney General’s approval,”

said Vargas.
